WHOOKILLEDKENNY

Whookilledkenny is a young Rap and Hip Hop artist based in Austin, Texas, with roots in Christian Rap. He started making music first in church after his grandma urged him to rap about the Lord because she’d always find him asleep during service. He took on the challenge and eventually made that into his identity growing up. With a pretty good reputation as a Christian rapper in Austin, he got quite a few people to listen to his Christian Rap remix of the track Ice Cream Paint Job by Durrough.

As good as he was at Christian Rap, that wasn’t where his career was headed. Eventually, he turned to create secular Rap when he grew older, and he made his official debut as a rapper in April 2019 by releasing the album titled Pay the Fee. The album consisted of eight songs, and the track Super Wet from the album also has a music video on YouTube, which has garnered nearly 20,000 views at the time this piece was published.

When he first released this album, he claimed that everything he’s done for it has been organic, and that’s rather evident to listeners. There’s a certain level of intensity in the tracks that are arguably borne out of authenticity and skill. This characteristic of uniqueness with his creative expression is present in tracks following his debut. His latest six-song EP titled No Refunds showcases his aversion to conforming to common trends in the Hip Hop scene. That said, there are still elements that are recognizable to this genre to create a sense of familiarity and entertainment for Rap and Hip Hop fans.

With this EP, one could argue that Whookilledkenny deserves to be recognized and accepted in the contemporary international Rap stratosphere. While that may be up for debate, there’s no doubt that these six tracks offer some interesting approaches to this genre with striking vocals, captivating charisma, and punchy rhythms. It’s clear that fans have come to appreciate his take on this art form, as he has continually managed to grow the size of his listeners over time.

As important as music is to his career, he’s also a businessman with his very own tequila company AgaveBoom. At the same time, he’s busy working with various jewelers for fashion-related projects. The fact that he’s also very business-oriented affects the way he operates as a musician and an artist. He treats it as a business, which is integral for growing fanbases and reaching more listeners. Whookilledkenny has clearly done that, considering that in less than three years, he has over 240,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with a couple of tracks even crossing the million plays mark.

Whookilledkenny may be young and new to the Rap and Hip Hop scene, but his work so far has indicated that he’s going places in the near future. In fact, he’s already managed to make an impact on music listeners and critics around the world. From a local church rapper to a recognized star, looking back at his journey is always a treat.
