THE REAL McCOY

Have you ever watched a silent movie and seen a story unfold in black and white?

Were you in awe?

Were you speechless at the power of mere clips?

Say hello to Michael McCoy, a photographer who prides himself on being a master storyteller. His tool? A camera.  Having used photography to deal with his deployment in war ravaged Iraqi regions and cope with PTSD after he returned home, McCoy turned out to be a very gifted photographer – and a testament to healing.

McCoy is a two time combat veteran and a photographer based in Washington DC. He has been religiously covering politics, environmental issues and social causes in the country. Having covered the massive Black Lives Matter movement, the Freddie Gray case, the Women Disobey Rally and other monumental socioeconomic and political causes, McCoy has displayed exceptional talent capturing the very essence of his subjects.

Owing it all to the right time and right angle, McCoy is a humble artist who has covered expansive areas in order to get the perfect and most evocative picture. Beaches, churches, synagogues, crowds and other places where life thrives— McCoy has captured stunning portraits of life around us and how we as human beings have interacted with the earth, nature and one another.

McCoy’s portraits capture human emotions beautifully. His work titled Honor and Respect photographs grieving loved ones of veterans who lost their lives serving the country, a breathtaking and heart wrenching ode to grief, love, loss, family and the state.

His other artistic feats titled Invisible Wounds and Black In America capture sensitive and melancholy portraits of life all around the country when devastation, loss and life are implicated. His work in these series is political without being too loud about it, beautiful without saying it is and powerful because of its simplicity and honesty.

McCoy also covers daring, creative and exhilarating moments in life, like surviving a government shut down to a very African event at the beach. McCoy has the special gift of bringing his subject alive with just a photograph. He can create a sense of connection and unity between the photo’s subject and the stranger who stands looking at them.

Super talented, bold and definitely a master at eliciting feelings from the depths of your being, Michael McCoy is a master storyteller who wields a lens, a burning passion and a mind that’s healed doing what it loves.
