NO BLACKS ALLOWED
Centuries ago, when archaic religion and people with fair skin enslaved a race of dark skinned people, the world turned over in a matter of years. Subjected to cruelty beyond words, blacks were subject to atrocious treatments. A few decades ago, thinkers coined words like “race” and “ethnicity” – birthing the term “racism”, an out-group directed hate for those with skins that weren’t alabaster white.
The thing is, there really is no historical record of how people divided themselves because of skin differences. There is also no record of when these people decided that the blacks were going to be the subjugated ones – and not vice versa.
As we enter 2020, I’m still left asking: Why are the blacks so hated? You love their culture, you love their food, you tour their countries, you exploit their people – and yet, you have this burgeoning hate which doesn’t seem to make sense.
If we look at evolution, the strongest species are supposed to be the ultimate survivors. The strong species are meant to be the alphas. Sure, humans won the race against all other living organisms, but within humans, who decided that the white race was superior?
Throughout history, there are instances of insulting segregation. Bars would have signs claiming “No dogs and blacks allowed”, hospitals had separate entries, and housing communities were also divided based on color. Marriage between a white and black individual was illegal and people of color were not allowed to vote.
Sure, we’ve come a long way from all that. But since the past few years, I feel like we’ve gone full circle and met with our ancestors who were unaware of how big the term “racism” would one day be. Although the world has become a global village, connected via routes and transport which bridge cultures and merge people of varying skin colors as one population, political turmoil and social unrest in the past years have highlighted how that mindset still remains.
Are you familiar with conditioning? According to research, how we respond to racial differences depends on how our beliefs were formed about them – this activity usually takes place in the Amygdala, the feistiest part of the brain, which is also responsible for fear conditioning and aggression. It makes me wonder whether our ancestors passed on their racist inclinations to their latter generations – is that why there is so much hate for the blacks?
I’m not going to deny that the world’s a crazy place. It’s bizarre, depressing, colorful, crazy and beautiful all simultaneously. But at the same time, I wonder whether this world is a no man’s land for blacks, and my heart breaks at the thought.
