BRINGING THE 90'S BACK
Inspired by a relationship with no defining status, and experiencing the damage of our own decisions, the rising Somali Canadian R&B singer Amaal is a stunning story teller about how love can have it highs and lows.
Light, airy and sweet, Amaal’s vocals are super chill, mellow and definitely ethereal. Placed next to the quick, beat bopping, feet shuffling music of today, Amaal’s sound is that of the early 00’s and the late ‘90s. Having been compared to Aaliyah, Amaal is unique in her own way. With lyrics themed around growth, love, heart break and causes around her, the socially-conscious artist is definitely a girl worth waiting for.
Amaal’s sound is influenced by her personal life experiences, her travels and her work with Ugandan women and women’s groups. She also released a beautiful music video for her track “Coming and Going”, a lovely infusion of soul, pop and of course, R&B. Her biggest release, “Mufasa”, on the other hand, has surpassed over 2 million listens on music platforms – and the numbers continue to rise, as does her fame!
Amaal was forced to leave Somalia because of civil war and settled in Canada with her family. As the middle child of seven sisters, she began singing at 16, and started working with Universal Music Canada later on. Ambitious, soulful and woke, we all need some Amaal in our lives.
