SAMA: Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Gap between Palestine and the world.

Remember when Google removed Palestine from maps?

It drove people all over the world into a frenzied rage. No Palestine anywhere, not on maps, not on Google satellite search – nowhere!

But if the maps of the world won’t unite people, then maybe music will. Meet Sama Abdulhadi, the queen of the Arab-electro trend and the techno fire starter in Ramallah. As one of the first of 15 DJs in Palestine, and one of the 3 female ones, Sama has become a Boiler Room favorite.

Sama began rapping and break-dancing in the 2000’s hip-hop scene replacing that vibe with Tiesto and IIO, thanks to her brother. Ten years ago she began playing at house parties. Today, she plays for techno loving people in some of the hottest cities like Ramallah, Paris, London, Cairo, Berlin, Geneva, Izmir and so many more.

Releasing two albums under the name Skywalker, the 28 year old is now the most famous Palestinian DJ. She used her music to highlight the plight of her people, and encouraging women to step up and claim their dreams. She said in an interview how a female security officer at an airport looked absolutely inspired when she mentioned she’s traveling to DJ at a concert.

Her music has a political message, it’s obvious. Sama claims that techno is a world of its own, where identity and nationality don’t matter. Living in Paris, Sama says that techno handed her the key to freedom and a way for the world to see Palestinians as human. In fact, Sama played a fire set for a Boiler Room Palestine event just six months ago. The mix of people, cultures and languages are stunning testimony to how music bridges differences. Her music infuses modern day Berlin with archaic Arabic beats, bringing new sounds to the scene.

Bold, fierce and simply amazing, Sama even lugged her equipment to the outskirts of Ramallah to play in the heavily guarded Haifa a few times, under the watchful eyes of Israeli soldiers.

Using music as a way to etch the memories of her people and lay roots of her culture deep into the senses of people all over the world, Sama Abdulhadi is spearheading the mission to bring Palestine back into memory and is taking over the world.
