The African Giant: Burna Boy

“When it's time for music to be made, it's almost like my ancestors just come into me and then it's them."

Super hot and one of a kind, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, more popularly known as Burna Boy, is a 28 year old Nigerian artist stealing hearts all over the world with his music, voice and looks. He has over 4.3 million followers on Instagram.

Thanks to African Giant, his 7th project, the world now knows Burna Boy and his mad skills. Inspired from his Nigerian heritage and childhood, Burna Boy fuses Nigerian, French and Jamaican music to create those exotic vibes his music is so famous for. With lyrics sung in his heavy, rich and ever-so-deep pidgin English and Yoruba, and music inspired by politics, culture and love, he’s been burning the stage at his innumerable performances and setting stereos on fire since the release of African Giant.

As one of the biggest rap artists in Nigeria, Burna Boy made it big with sexy tracks like On The Low, the ultra-cool music video for Anybody and of course, the very political and passionate Collateral Damage. Aiming to “shine a light on a place and on people and a situation and everything that hasn’t been in a light for a long time,” Burna Boy’s videos feature innumerable references to his home country, people and heritage.

High fashion, stunning dances and unique music make up majority of Burna Boy’s music videos and as a proud Nigerian, the cultural representation in his music is bound to be noticed. It’s pretty interesting how the post-Black Panther movement has given people of color a platform to express themselves and make themselves known – and boy, we’re glad Burna Boy took the stage.

The beautiful music, besides inciting people to get up and move, is definitely a new sound. Mixing Nigerian music with Afrobeat, Pop, Reggae and even R&B, Burna Boy has created music which caters to both Western fans and his local ones, too, evoking the debate on music inclusivity.

Using his platform as a way to revive history, Burna Boy’s powerful music talks about unconditional love in today’s time while having a past defined by British Colonialism, Nigerian politics and a mix of cultures. With lyrics that are uplifting and satirical, Burna Boy’s diverse portfolio of tracks on this album is testimony to how brilliant music can be.

Impossible to sing along to, but definitely easy to vibe to, Burna Boy is definitely going to make it big time. Claiming he’s an African Giant when Coachella released their line-up and put him in the mere bottom, he’s not afraid to ask for what’s his and as a proud black man, he’s a brilliant icon of progress; and not to mention that voice – it is unforgettable.

Can’t wait for more from the African Giant.
