Trump’s history of racism

In January 2018, a member of the United Nations called Donald Trump racist after Trump called countries in Africa and Haiti “shitholes”. However, this was not surprising. Discrimination against people of color has been Trump’s defining feature. How far back do his discrimination policies go? Read ahead to find out.

1970’s

Trump Management Corporation

In 1973, Richard Nixon’s Department of Justice sued the Trump family for not renting apartments to African Americans “because of color”.

The company was charged for having stricter policies against black owners and for lying to black applicants about unit availability.

Guess who was the president of the company at that time? A 26-year-old Donald Trump.

1980’s

Trump Casinos

A similar kind of treatment against blacks was seen in casinos. A former Trump employee reported that the black staff members were usually called off duty if Trump and Ivana came to visit it.

The former President of the Trump Plaza Casino reported that Trump once told him that he hated black men counting his money. Trump stated, “I think that the guy is lazy. And it's probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It's not anything they can control.”

1990’s

Central Park Five

In 1989, Trump called for execution of the Central Park Five in the city’s newspaper.   Five black and Latino teenagers were accused of raping a white woman in Central park. Even though they were exonerated, after the attacker confessed, Trump refused to acknowledge their innocence.

2000’s

Obama’s birth certificate

Trump, in 2011, started claiming that Barack Obama was not a U.S. citizen. He claimed that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. He stated, “Our current president came out of nowhere. Came out of nowhere. In fact, I'll go a step further. The people that went to school with him, they never saw him. They don't know who he is."

Trump, at times, refuses to believe Obama is a U.S citizen despite having seen his birth certificate.

Muslim ban and Mexican wall

In 2016, the acts of bigotry became a subject of extreme national security. During his campaign, he called for a ban on seven Muslim countries. He justified the ban by claiming that Muslims are terrorists.

He also asked all undocumented individuals to be expelled and called Mexican immigrants “rapists”.  On this basis, he also called for the Mexican Wall to be built.

In 2013, he tweeted that, “Sadly, the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our major cities is committed by blacks and Hispanics.”

Trump’s injustice against people of color just does not seem to end. Only recently, he claimed that Haitians “have AIDS” and that Nigerian immigrants would not “go back to their huts” after being allowed in America.
