5 ONES TO CATCH AT AFROPUNK BROOKLYN 2018

Add this to your summer festival list: AFROPUNK Festival. Taking place in Brooklyn, New York, on Aug. 25 & 26, this is a time to celebrate the booming black community. Rooted in activism and self-care, AFROPUNK is going global as they take the festivities to London, South Africa, Paris, and Atlanta. Over the years, AFROPUNK has become a critically acclaimed festival with features in The New York TimesTeenVogueGQ Style and The Guardian.

As for Brooklyn 2018, we handpicked 10 rebellious musicians who will slay the stage and who are a testament to the unapologetically real culture that defines AFROPUNK.

MAHALIA

Mahalia Burkmar, better known by the stage name Mahalia, is an English singer, songwriter and actress, based in Birmingham.

BLAC RABBIT

Blac Rabbit is an American psychedelic rock band based in Rockaway Beach, Queens, formed in the early 2010s. The band's songwriters are singer-guitarist twins Amiri and Rahiem Taylor, who are backed by Patrick Jones (drums) and Josh Lugo (bass). The band has released one EP

FANTASTIC NEGRITO

Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, better known by his stage name Fantastic Negrito, is an African-American singer-songwriter whose music spans blues, R&B, and roots music. He released his new album Please Don't Be Dead on the 15th June, 2018.

DENZEL CURRY

Denzel Rae Don Curry is an American rapper and songwriter.

Raised in Carol City, Florida, Curry started rapping whilst in sixth grade and began working on his first mixtape in 2011, whilst attending school. Influenced by underground Florida rapper SpaceGhostPurrp, the mixtape was later featured on Purrp's social media, giving Curry local attention and resulting in Curry joining Purrp's hip-hop collective, Raider Klan.

Curry left Raider Klan in 2012 following disagreements with SpaceGhostPurrp, releasing his debut full-length album a year later while still in high school, titled Nostalgic 64 on September 3, 2013. He has gone on to released two more projects, Imperial which included features from Rick Ross and Joey Bada$$ on March 9, 2016 and Ta13oo, which peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200, on July 27, 2018.

DUCKWRTH

Jared Lee, known by his stage name Duckwrth, is an American rapper and songwriter from South Los Angeles, California. He released a split project with The Kickdrums in 2015 titled Nowhere. In 2016, Duckwrth released his first full-length album, I'm Uugly. In late 2017 he released a Mixtape, An XTRA UUGLY Mixtape.
