June McDoom: NEO FOLK

June McDoom: NEO FOLK

June McDoom, a versatile musician, was born and raised in South Florida and has Jamaican heritage. Surrounded by reggae music from a young age, music became an integral part of her life. She developed a keen interest in songwriting and was particularly drawn to the folk music of the 1960s and 1970s. Her musical journey expanded when she pursued a degree in Jazz Performance in New York City.

Noticing a lack of representation for artists with backgrounds similar to hers in the folk music scene, McDoom was inspired to create a space that would introduce folk music to a broader audience while incorporating her Jamaican roots. Her unique blend of influences, including reggae rhythms, vintage analog synths, and soulful vocals, characterizes her music.

McDoom made her debut with the single "The City" in July 2022. The song poignantly reflects on generational, personal, and cultural change. Recorded entirely from home with Evan Wright, it showcases her ethereal vocals and marks the beginning of her textured exploration of music production.

For McDoom, each song is an opportunity to incorporate elements from her diverse musical palette, including folk, soul, and reggae, creating a tapestry of sounds that reflect her identity. She aims to empower listeners to embrace their uniqueness and heritage through her music.

Her debut EP, "On The Rise," produced independently over several years, was released on the Temporary Residence label. McDoom embarked on her first tour with Nick Hakim, whom she had long admired, further solidifying her presence in the music scene.

Among McDoom's notable tracks is "On My Way," released in October 2022. This song captures the profound longing for connection with a loved one. The music is recorded in multiple versions, and the final rendition features a dynamic tempo that accentuates the emotional depth of the song.

With influences ranging from West Coast Folk to Jazz and Soul, McDoom's music defies categorization, offering a fresh integration of folk with modern sounds. Her contribution to the music industry fills a void and showcases the richness of cultural diversity in music.
